brief: "I am an NRI and want to identify myself as a contemporary Indian with my clothes and accessories, could you design something which shows both my heritage and my current lifestyle."
concept: Leheria (or leheriya) is a traditional style of tie dye practised in Rajasthan, India.
The technique gets its name from the Rajasthani word for wave, it is the only craft in India that is exclusively practised by Indian women, who are known as bandheras...
Process: The lehariya surface was self tied & dyed
Final Product: This outfit is an assemblage of three separate components, each of which has the essence of lehariya. These are modelled after the idea of a "capsule wardrobe," so each piece can be worn in various different permutations and combinations. Lehariya symbolises one of a kind identity to the fabric which makes each set very different.
Client: The clothing was designed with a 26-year-old woman in mind who works a 9 to 5 corporate job, lives in New York, and represents the Marwari culture of Rajasthan. The client demands casually elegant attire with a standout component. Since she is conscious of sustainability, she wants to be able to wear the components independently and in different combinations and permutations.
